During my career as a federal lobbyist and public relations consultant, I always began initial client meetings with the same question: Why are you considering hiring a lobbyist?
At first blush, this may seem like an idiotic question, but allow me the courtesy to explain. During hundreds of meetings, clients would present public policy and public perception problems to me. They could easily identify the apparent problem. Clients would also begin making their case to me, often discussing the positive aspects of their business. But, we didn't get to the heart of my question, why do you think you need a lobbyist, until we got to the pain.
Businesses and industries were being placed in danger of extinction due to certain policies or a failure to execute a proper media relations campaign. Others wanted to enter new markets or provide new services, but were unable to do so due to regulations. Some businesses were simply under-performing. This is the "pain" I speak of, and once identified, it makes coming up with a solution a lot easier. This pain brought the client to the meeting, and once identified, I worked with clients to formulate a plan to resolve the current and future threats to the success of their business.
